ÖLUM VE KIZ / DEATH AND THE MAIDEN
by Ariel Dorfman in a turkish translation
Ölum ve Kiz was presented as part of the Turkish Speaker's Festival at The Millfield Theatre and subsequently toured to Turkey (The Arcola Theatre) where Baris Celiloglu won the DIREKLERARASI THEATRE AWARD for best lead actress.
Painting by Egon Schiele
Working with a cast whose language I didn't share and relying on translation in rehearsals was a great challenge but, also enabled me to focus more on atmospheric elements and physicality whilst developing scenes. It was important to us that we created a timeless piece, contemporary and relatable, without ever mentioning a certain time and place, like Dorfman intended. Designer Rasa Selemonaviciute and I were inspired by Lars von Trier's film Dogville – we wanted to outline the setting of the country house whilst retaining the possibility of a more surreal world.
